We want to extend our sincerest thanks to Mohammad Shabani for his contributions to East Toronto Health Partner Ontario Health Team’s (ETHP OHT) Leadership Team, the Taylor-Massey Residents Wellness Council (TMRWC), and ETHP OHT’s Advisory Network. While Mohammad remains a member of TMRWC, he is stepping down from his roles as a co-chair of the TMRWC (since 2022) and community representative on the Leadership Team (since 2024).
Mohammad is a well-known resident and volunteer in the Taylor-Massey community. He helps run the local volleyball league and is committed to empowering and engaging young people through their involvement in sports. As a patient, caregiver and community leader, Mohammad brought to ETHP OHT valuable insights on the challenges and barriers that people face when accessing and navigating the healthcare system.
Mohammad has been involved in many ETHP OHT initiatives. His leadership and contributions have set a high bar, and we recognize the big shoes we have to fill as we look to other advisors to take on these roles. One of the first initiatives Mohammad was part of was ETHP OHT’s Primary and Community Care Response Teams (PCC RT), an initiative that began as a way to bring care to homebound seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic.
He later collaborated with the Institute for Health Policy, Management and Evaluation (IHPME) and Centre for Quality Improvement and Patient Safety at the University of Toronto on a quality improvement initiative that brought together community members, quality improvement experts and staff from across ETHP OHT. In 2023, he joined the ETHP Leadership Team as one of two community advisors. However, his most significant contribution was as the co-chair of the TMRWC. In this role, his love of the neighbourhood and working with his peers really shone through.
In 2022, the University of Toronto’s IHPME announced that Mohammad Shabani, together with fellow TMRWC other co-chair, Razia Rashed, were recipients of the inaugural Cathy Fooks Award for Research in recognition of their Leadership Excellence in Patient and Caregiver Engagement.
Through his commitment to improving access to health, community and social services and being a role model to youth, as well as a caring neighbour and a friend, Mohammad exemplifies what is best in our community.
We deeply value and appreciate everything he has done and sincerely hope that Mohammad will continue to lend his outstanding knowledge and experience to inform our future work.
With gratitude,
